Description of initiatives

Initiative 1

Activity 1

Short-term training / study stays of PhD students from UCT Prague at NMBU to gain the knowledge about development and validation of novel analytical non-targeted strategies for identification and quantification of relevant organic hazardous substances potentially occurring in selected food products. For this purpose, hands-on training in the NMBU laboratories will be provided. More information here.

Activity 2

Short-term training / study stay of PhD students from NMBU at UCT Prague to gain knowledge on analytical strategies based on critical assessment and comparison of performance characteristics, including capability to control regulatory requirements (maximum limits) of targeted and non-targeted approaches in food safety control. Knowledge of contamination scenarios, the impact of physicochemical and biochemical factors on hazardous chemicals fate and typical contaminants pattern in various food matrices, will be also shared.

Activity 3

Experts visit of UCT Prague research staff at NMBU. More information here.

Initiative 2

Organisation of a workshop on topic related to development and implementation of novel analytical strategies for control of contaminants mixtures in food. More information here.

Roland Kallenborn, Professor
Kallenborn_photo (ořez 215*215px)I am educated in biology and chemistry from the University of Kaiserslautern (Germany) and was awarded the doctorate degree (Dr. rer. nat.) from the University of Hamburg (Germany) in 1993 for a comprehensive study on persistent organic pollutant (POP) levels in common eiders (Somateria mollissima (L.)). I am currently employed as professor at the  Department of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science, Norwegian University Life Sciences (NMBU/IKBM) in Ås. In addition, I hold an adjunct Professorship at the University Centre in Svalbard (www.unis.no) in Arctic Technology.
My research is combining modern chemical analysis techniques and risk assessments for various types of organic contaminants (legacy and emerging organic xenobiotics) in food and environments. For this research work I am applying modern trace analysis techniques including high performance liquid and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and other detectors (incl. DAD, FID, TCD, ECD).

Prof Jana Hajslova is the head of the Department of Food Analysis and Nutrition, University of CHemistry and Technology, Prague (UCT Prague) and chairs Accredited (ISO17025) Laboratory "Food Quality and Safety". She is a widely recognized expert in the field of food / environmental chemistry and analysis; she has published more than 250 original papers on development of advanced analytical strategies of contaminants, residues, natural toxins and other biologically active compounds, authentication and metabolomics. Her research team has participated in many international and national projects at both research and management levels, including the EC 5 - 7th Framework Programme, HORIZON 2020, several COSTs and EEA and Norwegian grants. Prof Hajslova together with her PhD students has been involved in various bilateral international research activities; under her supervision, close collaboration with many world-renowned institutions, such as WHO, FAO, USDA and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre has been established. Currently she is the Czech Republic delegate in HORIZON 2020 SOCIETAL CHALLENGE 2: "Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Marine and maritime and inland water research and the Bioeconomy" committee. As the chairwomen, she had a key input in establishing a series of very reputable international symposia "Recent Advances in Food Analysis" series in 2003-2015.

Novel analytical strategies for control of contaminants mixtures in food: development of joint platform (CONTAMMIX)

A wide range of adverse effects on a biota, humans included, may result from exposure to various contaminant classes released into the environment through anthropogenic activates. A comprehensive monitoring of contaminants occurrence in environmental compartments and human food chain and taking measures to minimise emission sources is a current global challenge requiring international collaborative effort. The proposed project aims at deepening of cooperation in common research activities between two universities in the Czech Republic and Norway, University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague (UCT Prague) and Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), respectively. The strengthening and improvement of scientific activities will be based on a complementarity of partners´ competences in application of advanced strategies for food contaminants control. The Norwegian partner, NBMU, will support UCT Prague in a novel non-target screening strategies based on a high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). This novel approach enables, contrary to ´classic´ targeted analysis which is still employed in many labs, not only detection of ´unknown´ compounds present in sample, but also retrospective data mining, highly valuable function in case of emerging food contamination crisis. UCT Prague will share with until now mostly ´environmentally oriented´ NMBU long term experience in food safety control, including the knowledge of contamination scenarios, the impact of physicochemical and biochemical factors on hazardous chemicals fate and typical contaminants pattern in various food matrices. The strategies to exploit benefits offered by advanced mass spectrometry (MS) platforms and associated research needs will be the subject of scientific communication between the partners. Both young scientists (PhD students), and experienced academics and senior research staff will increase their research profiles through series of short-term trainings / study stays, expert’s visits and common workshop. The cooperation will also enable advancing of common initiatives leading to enhancing potential for research activities in the field of non-target analytical strategies in food safety control. It is expected that new collaborating research teams will be established which will follow the present research, and will also support future extension of the collaboration on research projects focusing on implementation of novel analytical strategies for control of emerging organic hazardous substances in food products.

The project "Novel analytical strategies for control of contaminants mixtures in food: development of joint platform" (CONTAMMIX)  benefits from a 688 000 CZK grant from Norway Grants. The aim of the project is to stimulate long-term cooperation, networking, knowledge sharing, capacity and competence building in research in the field of development of novel analytical strategies for control of contaminants mixtures in food.
